2008 School EnviromeNT Grants Awarded

Environment Minister Alison Anderson today said hundreds of Territory primary school students will benefit from the Northern Territory Government’s 2008 EnvironmeNT Grants.

“We want Territory students to learn about our unique environment in fun, interesting and beneficial ways,” Ms Anderson said.

“Territory schools benefiting from the Northern Territory Government’s 2008 School Environment Grants program will share $28,600 in funding.

“This includes Alawa Primary School in Darwin which received two grants totalling $3600.

“A grant for $2000 will enable Alawa Primary to purchase two 80 watt solar panels for its school farm, giving its 190 students a practical understanding of how solar energy works.

“Alawa Primary also received $1600 to create a cane toad-free haven for lizards and frogs.

“This program has links to FrogWatch and Greening Australia with students recording Frilled-neck lizard populations and making notes of cane toad sightings.

“I urge all Territory schools to apply for next year’s School Environment Grants and look forward to hearing what progress is being made at each of this year’s grant recipients.”
