Future Basketball Stars in Darwin

The future stars of Australian basketball will be in Darwin this week with the Darwin Basketball Association hosting the national Under 14 Boys Club Championships.

The Minister for Sport and Recreation, Karl Hampton, said this was an important junior competition and it is fantastic to see this event in Darwin.

“I encourage sports fans to head down to Marrara to check out the event and cheer on our Territory side, the NT North Geckos, “Mr Hampton said.

Twenty four teams from around Australia will battle it out for the prestigious tittle of Australian Club Champions.

Mr Hampton said the Northern Territory Government had supported the event by providing Marrara Indoor Stadium to event organisers at no cost for the competition.

“The Darwin Basketball Association has done a great job in organising the event and the NT Government is proud to support it,” he said.

“Territory players who participated in past Under 14 championships and went on to become NBL players, include Tim Duggan, Blake Truslove, Gary Boodnikoff and Brad Newley.

“You never know, we may see the next Territory NBL player at these championships.

“These championships are also a great opportunity for officials and there’s still places for volunteers interested in honing their skills.

“One such referee who started umpiring as a junior in Darwin and officiated at past Under 14 Championships was Travis Haslam. Travis went on to become an NBL referee.”

Anyone who is interested should meet at the DBA at Marrara Indoor Stadium at 11am on Sunday.

The NT North Geckos team: Jett Sukcharoen (Captain), Aaron Simpson, Henry Bui, Simon Collister, Thomas Naylor, Lance Schmidt, Daniel Clee, Joshue Emerton, Matthew aLee, Jonothan Barklay. Coach: Tim Duggan, Assistant Coaches: Andrew Hendy and Trish Steinohrt, Development Coach: Brianna Grazioli, Manager: Lance Schmidt.

The games commence on Monday 29 September with the NT North Geckos playing Nunawading Spectres at 11.00 am, Court 3, and again against Cockburn Cougars at 8.00 pm at Marrara Indoor Stadium.
