NTIS Performing on the International Stage

Minister for Sport and Recreation Karl Hampton today congratulated the Northern Territory Institute of Sport for its recent successes on the international sporting stage.

Mr Hampton visited the NTIS today and personally congratulated staff on their success.

“These recent achievements highlight the great work the NTIS has been undertaking,” he said.

NTIS sailing scholarship holder Ashlie Lane recently finished as the top ranked Australian at the World Laser 4.7 Youth Sailing Championships held in Trogir, Croatia.

Fifteen year old Ashlie, who earlier this year won the Australian Youth Nationals, finished a creditable 27th at the Championships.

“With over six hundred sailors from 43 countries competing in this competition, congratulations to Ashlie on her fantastic performance,” Mr Hampton said.

Meanwhile NTIS Performance Enhancement Services Manager, Dr Matt Brearley travelled to Beijing as a recovery specialist for the Australian Olympic team.

Dr Brearley had been advising the Australian Olympic Committee for the past year on strategies to maximise the performance of athletes in hot and humid conditions.

“It is fantastic to see NTIS representatives involved in sport at the international level and especially so in the unique sports science arena, ” Mr Hampton said.

Dr Brearley was awarded an International Olympic Committee scholarship covering all costs to attend.

“It was fantastic to today be able to personally meet NTIS staff and thank them for their ongoing efforts working with our elite Territory athletes,” Mr Hampton said.
