Territory Athletes Selected for Friendship Games

Minister for Sport and Recreation Karl Hampton today congratulated eight young Territory athletes who have been selected to participate in the upcoming BIMP-EAGA Friendship Games.

Mr Hampton said this will be the first time the Northern Territory has sent a team to compete in the Friendship Games in Brunei Darussalam.

“This is an exciting opportunity to compete against the best young athletes in the South East Asian region and I congratulate these Territorians on their selection,” Mr Hampton said.

“The team will travel to Brunei Darussalam next month to compete in swimming, tennis and badminton.

“These games offer another pathway for young athletes to further develop their skills in their chosen sport.

“The Northern Territory Government is proud to financially support these athletes to compete in the BIMP-EAGA games.”

BIMP-EAGA was launched in 1994 as a cooperative initiative by Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. The BIMP-EAGA Sports Council then established the Friendship Games in 1996 to promote relationships through sport.

Minister for Asian Relations Kon Vatskalis said that responding to invitations to attend BIMP-EAGA events would strengthen ties between the Northern Territory and the participating South East Asian countries.

“Developing sporting links is an important step in building relationships across the board with our neighbours,” Mr Vatskalis said.

The following athletes have been chosen to represent the Northern Territory at the Games: Daniel Parker (Tennis), Sam Giess (Tennis), Sarah Butler (Swimming), Tobias Barnes (Swimming), Jacob Modah (Badminton), Jamie Moriarty (Badminton), Aimee Mullins (Badminton) and Jodie Eniss (Badminton).

A full range of sports at the 2008 Games include: athletics, aquatics, badminton, futsal, sepak takraw, pencak silat and tennis.

The games will be held from 28 to 30 November at Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam.
