Karl Hampton MINISTER FOR SPORT AND RECREATION |
Minister for Sport and Recreation Karl Hampton today congratulated the Central Australian community of Yuendumu on the official opening of their community swimming pool.
Mr Hampton said residents have worked hard to establish the pool, which was funded by the Territory Government, the Federal Government and the Yuendumu community.
“This is an exciting day for the Yuendumu community and the swimming pool will provide many benefits for local residents,” Mr Hampton said.
“The pool has already provided opportunities in local employment and training with locals gaining nationally recognised qualifications in water safety and pool management.
“Swimming pools are an important community asset and local residents will gain from the opportunities it will bring.
“The pool will provide recreational activities and will also allow important water safety information to be taught to community members.
“Community infrastructure such as swimming pools enhance the quality of life in remote communities and can have a dramatic impact on health and education outcomes.”
Activities such as learn to swim lessons, lap swimming and life saving along with other leisure activities will take place at the pool.
Mr Hampton was joined in officially opening the pool by Federal Minister for Indigenous Affairs Jenny Macklin, Federal Member for Lingiari Warren Snowdon and Territory Senator Trish Crossin.
