State of the Art Cricket Centre at Marrara

Minister for Sport and Recreation Karl Hampton announced today that a state of the art cricket facility will be built at Marrara.

The decision follows negotiations with Cricket Australia to secure the long term growth of cricket in the Territory.

“This decision to build a training centre at Marrara is a fantastic result that will ensure the growth of grass roots cricket in the Territory,” said Minister for Sport and Recreation Karl Hampton.

“Earlier this year we saw the successful return of International cricket to the Territory with the one day series against Bangladesh at Marrara Stadium.

“The Northern Territory Government will provide $2.1 million towards the redevelopment with Cricket Australia providing an addition $1 million in the project for grass roots cricket.

“A first class training facility will be built at Marrara Cricket Ground that includes a turf training surface, a sheltered hard wicket training facility along with additional with improvements to ensure first class facilities.

“These training facilities will boost local cricket and hopefully one day we will see a Territorian playing for Australia in front of a home crowd at Marrara,” said Mr Hampton.

“It is unfortunate that it was not possible to secure suitable terms for this facility to be built at Gardens Oval, however the NT Government is focused on making these state of the art facilities a reality as soon as possible for Territory cricketers.
