Stay Safe This Wet - Don’t Play In Pipes And Drains

Minister for Local Government Rob Knight today launched an advertising campaign urging young Territorians not to play in pipes and drains.

The advertising campaign, a joint initiative of the NT Government, Darwin City Council, Palmerston City Council and the NT Water Safety Advisory Council, highlight the potentially life threatening dangers of playing in storm water drains.

Mr Knight, who was joined by Darwin Lord Mayor Graeme Sawyer and Palmerston Mayor Robert Macleod, said the television and radio ads are aimed at children aged seven to 15.

“We want all Territory kids to be water safety wise, stay safe and look out for each other,” Mr Knight said.

“As the heavy downpours of the wet season set in across the Top End, flash flooding can happen quickly and storm water drains can quickly turn into fast-flowing flooded rivers.

“Kids are always on the look-out for adventure and new places to play – this campaign makes it clear that storm water drains and pipes are not the place to do it.”

The ads feature rapping frogs singing the key message ‘Use your Brain, Don’t Play in Pipes and Drains’.

The NT Government has committed $10 000 and both Councils have each contributed $5000 to support the initial 4-week schedule.

“With rain on the way, the campaign is a timely reminder for parents to discuss water safety with their children and remind them of the sudden dangers that can appear during the wet season,” said Mr Knight.

“Even the strongest swimmers can find themselves in trouble – drains are not the place to play.”
