Alice Springs to Host National Golf Championships

The Alice Springs Golf Club will host the 2009 Australian Boys and Girls Amateur Championships in April and now with the support of the Northern Territory Government the Alice course will be in top shape.

Minister for Sport and Recreation Karl Hampton today announced that the Northern Territory Government will provide a $10 000 grant to the Alice Springs Golf Club to upgrade their course.

“This event will bring some of the finest young golfers to the Territory and this grant will ensure they play on a high standard course,” Mr Hampton said.

“The Alice Springs golf course is already rated one of the top desert courses in the world and this funding will ensure that the facility will continue to be top class.”

It is expected around 240 junior players from around Australia will attend the championships early next year.

“This grant will assist the club with hosting such a major event as well as ensuring the course is prepared,” Mr Hampton said.

“This is a fantastic tournament and I congratulate all involved at the Alice Springs Golf Club on securing an event such as this.”

The Championships are expected to provide a boost to the economy with many families and friends expected to make a trip to Alice to support the players.

Previous winners include Karrie Webb, Stuart Appleby and Adam Scott, who won the event the last time it was held in Alice Springs in 1997.

“Locals will have a chance to view some great golf and maybe see a champion of the future in action,” Mr Hampton said.

The Championships will be played from April 6th to 21st 2009.
