Old Hospital Site Public Consultation Begins Tomorrow

Development of Darwin’s old hospital site into an iconic park will take an important step tomorrow with the start of the public consultation process.

Planning Minister Delia Lawrie today said there was significant interest among Top Enders in the old hospital site’s future.

“The old hospital site has a special place in the hearts of many Territorians because they were either born there or because of its proximity to the former Kahlin Compound,” Ms Lawrie said.

“We want the public – including local residents, youth, historical and cultural groups – to have their say on how the NT Government should progress plans to develop the old hospital site.

“There has been tremendous interest by many Territorians since the Northern Territory Government unveiled plans to develop the old hospital site into a first-class park last month.

“A lot of the interest has focused on the mixture of residential and park land, as well as how the old hospital site's historical values will best be recognised.”

Ms Lawrie said print and radio advertisements would be rolled out from tomorrow to invite comments in writing or online via the www.nt.gov.au/dpi website.

“The Northern Territory Government’s plans to develop the old hospital site are focused on turning one of Darwin’s central locations into a wonderful place to live and enjoy the Territory’s great lifestyle,” Ms Lawrie said.

“The public park’s concept plans include a children’s water playground, gazebos, public art sculptures, open air stage, covered picnic and barbecue areas, flower gardens and shade trees.

“The new parkland is a critical component of the Henderson Government’s Ribbon of Green program to beautify public open space in Darwin.”

The public consultation phase – headed by local historian Mickey Dewar - closes on 12 December 2008.
