Karl Hampton MINISTER FOR SPORT AND RECREATION |
The ‘Heineken Hottest 7’s in the World’ was today officially launched by Minister for Sport and Recreation Karl Hampton and Australian Wallaby Rugby Union player Julian Huxley.
The Northern Territory Government has supported the event by elevating it to major event status, committing $300 000 over the next three years to ensure the events ongoing growth.
The Heineken Hottest 7’s are a Territory sporting success story and the NT Government is committed to this great event,” said Minister for Sport and Recreation Karl Hampton.
“With $60 000 in prize money up for grabs it is expected that the 2009 event will be bigger and more colourful than ever.
“We have already seen increased international expressions of interest (prior to registration) that includes teams from Hong Kong, Devetalevu (Fijian Invitational), Guam, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, Samoa, Singapore and the South Sea Drifters.
Beginning in 1989 as the Territory 7’s the event has grown in popularity and size. Since 2005 the 7’s have been known as the ‘Heineken Hottest 7’s in the World’ and are one of the premier 7’s events on the world stage.
A women’s competition was introduced in 2007 further expanding the competition.
NT Rugby Union Chief Executive Officer Tim Heath said the NT Government funding has ensured the growth of the event with a number of new features at the ground.
“The support of the NT Government will mean competitors and spectators will benefit with improved amenities and additional entertainment with pre and post match activities.
The event is also strongly supported by the community organisation ‘Friends of Rugby’ and Mr Hampton acknowledged its ongoing efforts in supporting this event.
“It is fantastic to see the local Rugby Union community and Territory businesses get behind the tournament,” Mr Hampton said.
