Sport and Recreation Minister Karl Hampton has announced recipients of the 2008/09 Grass Roots Sports Grants for round one and nominations are set to close for round two.

 

This first round of grants saw 44 sporting organisations from around the Territory successful in receiving funding from the Northern Territory Government scheme.

 

“Local clubs provide many opportunities in sport for Territory residents and these grants will assist by providing important funds,” Mr Hampton said.

 

Over 70 applications were received from across the Territory with around $85 000 in funding available to sporting groups. 

 

The popular program provides individual grants up to $3000 for new and innovative ideas to encourage participation in sport.

 

“This is a great initiative that provides funding directly to local clubs assisting the growth in grass roots sports,”Mr Hampton said.

 

“The Northern Territory Government is committed to sport in the Territory and these grants will mean more Territorians can get out there with their community and family, and participate in sport and recreation activities.”

 

For those groups wishing to apply for a Grass Roots Grant, Round two is now open and closes December 12th 2008.

 

“I would encourage all sporting groups to consider applying for a Grass Roots Grants to assist their club,” Mr Hampton added.
