Free Bus Travel For Students In The Territory

Students in the Northern Territory will be able to catch buses for free from next week.

Acting Chief Minister Delia Lawrie today said free bus travel on all scheduled services on the Territory’s school and public bus network would be available to all students attending primary school through to university from Tuesday, 27 January 2009.

“Free public transport for students every day in the Territory is a fresh idea that will cut the cost of travelling on the public bus network,” Ms Lawrie said.

“The Northern Territory Government is delivering on a key election commitment by providing free bus travel to students - becoming the first Australian state or territory to do so.

“We recently became the first state or territory to provide free bus travel to seniors, pensioners and carers, delivering on an election commitment in the process.

“These initiatives are part of the Henderson Government’s plan to extend the public bus network and increase public transport use.

“By increasing public transport use it helps to reduce carbon emissions, which results in a greener Territory.”

Free bus travel is available to all Australian students with student identification but does not include international student card holders and school-based excursions.

To travel for free on public buses, seniors, pensioners or carers need to present one of the following cards to the bus driver:

• Australian Government Pensioner Concession Card (Centrelink)

• NT Government Pensioner and Carer Concession Card

• NT Government Seniors Card

• Other State or Territory Government Seniors Card.
