Territory Government Supports Rugby League

Minister for Sport and Recreation Karl Hampton today announced Northern Territory Government support for Territory sides to compete in the Junior National Rugby League competition.

“Participation of junior rugby league players in a national competition provides great experience and a pathway for future participation at an elite senior level”, Mr Hampton said.

“The NT Government is providing funding of $50 000 to assist the NT Rugby League with costs associated with entering both U16 and U18 teams in the 2009 National competition.

“These Territory sides will play in the ‘Northern Pool’ against teams from Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, Mackay and Wide Bay.

“The top two teams will then go on to play in the final series which begins in early May.

“This initiate will have extensive benefits for our junior rugby league players with development through exposure to national level competition.

“This is one of the best junior age rugby league competitions in the world and our Territory players will be watched by NRL talent scouts.”

The competition commences this weekend at Richardson Park with matches against the Wide Bay Bulls as a curtainraiser to the Gold Coast Titans vs. Cronulla Sharks NRL game.

“Rugby League is a popular sport in the Territory and the NT Government contributed significantly to bring this NRL match to Darwin,” Mr Hampton said.

“Sport is a great part of the Territory lifestyle, and the NT Government is committed to bringing top class sport to the Territory for families to enjoy.

“It allows our youngsters the opportunity to see their sporting heroes in action without travelling interstate.”

As part of the agreement, the Gold Coast Titans and Cronulla Sharks will take part in coaching and community events during their stay in the Territory.

The Rugby League action begins from 4pm on Saturday with free buses from Darwin City, Casuarina and Palmerston to Richardson Park.
