Hockey Camp for Darwin

Minister for Sport and Recreation Karl Hampton today welcomed the announcement Hockey Australia will hold the Men’s Junior World Cup training camp and team selection trials in Darwin next month.

Mr Hampton said Hockey Australia’s decision highlighted the excellent services and facilities of the Northern Territory Institute of Sport.

“This is yet another example of how highly regarded the NTIS is in elite athlete development and is a compliment to the sports science expertise here in the Territory,” Mr Hampton said.

“As well as access to NTIS expertise, players will also have the opportunity to acclimatise to the humidity expected during Junior World Cup games in South East Asia.

“Territorians and NTIS scholarship holders Adrian Lockley and Leon Hayward have been chosen in the initial squad of 25 players for the training camp.

“Former NTIS scholarship holder Jonathon Peris who recently moved to South Australia for his hockey has also been chosen in the squad.

“A number of internal matches will be played throughout the camp providing an excellent display of the country’s up-and-coming elite hockey players.”

The camp will also provide a professional development opportunity for the coaches, sport program and performance enhancement staff at the NTIS.

Players will be put through their final paces during an intensive training and final selection camp from 23 April – 1 May 2009.

The Junior World Cup will be held in Singapore and Malaysia from the 1 June – 21 June 2009.
