Karl Hampton MINISTER FOR SPORT AND RECREATION |
Minister for Sport and Recreation Karl Hampton today visited the new netball courts at Marrara and inspected the final surface being installed on the courts.
“It is fantastic to see the new home of netball in the Territory in the final stages before completion, Mr Hampton said.
“Netball has one of the highest participation rates of any sport in the Territory and these courts will allow the sport to continue to grow in the Top End.
“We will have ten first class netball courts in total, six with the synpave synthetic surface and four rubberised rebound ace courts.
“The rebound ace surface is one of the best possible surfaces to play netball on as it decreases the chance of injuries through its rubberised technology.
“This $6.2 million facility will allow netball to continue to grow here in the Territory and help to develop national and international level players from the NT.
“The NT Government has also committed $150 000 in funding for the next three years for the Territory Storm Netball team.
“This investment will ensure the growth of the sport by providing Territory athletes with a pathway and provides an opportunity to represent the NT in national competition.
The Northern Territory Netball Association will lease the complex from the NT Government with the Darwin Netball Association also being based at the complex.
“Power and water has been connected to the facility and once the courts surface is complete in the next few weeks we will see the landscaping completed,” Mr Hampton said.
“The new facility is expected to be open by early May and will host the dry season
The Netball Centre will include:
- four rebound ace courts and six synpave synthetic courts
- change rooms, administration offices and kiosk
- umpires and first aid rooms
- car parking, fencing and landscaping
- caretaker’s residence and storeroom
