Australian Team Prepares in Darwin

The best young hockey players from around Australia arrived in Darwin today for an intensive training and acclimatisation camp ahead of the upcoming Hockey Junior World Cup.

“Hockey Australia has chosen to hold this camp in Darwin due to the international standard pitch at Marrara together with the facilities and expertise of the Northern Territory Institute of Sport (NTIS),” said Minister for Sport and Recreation Karl Hampton.

“Players will be put through their final paces in a vigorous training program that will include practice matches.

“The conditions here in Darwin are similar to those that the squad will face at the Junior World Cup in Singapore and Malaysia in early June.

”I congratulate the three Territorians that have been selected in the squad Adrian Lockley, Leon Hayward and Robert Duguid.

“Adrian and Leon both hold current NTIS Individual Athlete Scholarships whilst Robert holds an NTIS Development scholarship.

“Also in the squad is long time Territorian Jonathon Peris who is a former NTIS scholarship holder currently residing in South Australia to pursue his hockey career.

Darwin was similarly used as a training base for the Australian Men’s Olympic team leading up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

“The camp will also provide a professional development opportunity for NTIS coaches with Australian National Coaches Ric Charlesworth and Graham Reid conducting training sessions.

“NTIS services available to be utilised by the squad include the strength training gym, cooling/recovery baths, ice jackets, sport science research, video analysis and sports medicine support.

“I encourage Territorians to go along and watch some of Australia’s future stars at the intra squad matches being held during the camp.”

Matches are scheduled for Friday April 24th at 5.30pm, Sunday April 26th at 7pm and Monday April 27th at 5pm.
