A-League Comes to Darwin

The Northern Territory Government today announced an A-League exhibition match for Darwin in early July – which is expected to feature one of the all time greats of English football.

Chief Minister, Paul Henderson, said Adelaide United and the A-League’s newest team, the North Queensland Fury, the new home of former Liverpool great Robbie Fowler, will play at Larrakia Park on July 2.

“Football is an extremely popular sport in the Territory and the NT Government is strong supporter of bringing this match to Darwin,” Mr Henderson said.

“Sport is a great part of the Territory lifestyle, and the NT Government is committed to bringing top class sport to the Territory for families to enjoy.

“Football, soccer call it what you like, Territorians love it.

“I am sure this match will attract a capacity crowd enjoying Top Class sport in our beautiful dry season weather.

“The sport has one of the highest junior participation rates of any sport in the Territory.”

Minister for Sport and Recreation Karl Hampton said having this match in Darwin would allow youngsters to see their sporting heroes in action without travelling interstate.

“Young sports fans will also have the chance to learn from these elite players with both teams committing to holding community clinics with young players,” Mr Hampton said.

“This promotes sport as an important part of a healthy lifestyle as well as assisting with grass roots development.”
