The Territory Government has unveiled an exciting new vision for
Minister for Planning and Infrastructure Delia Lawrie said the Territory Government wants to promote a city where buildings maximise the potential for breeze, light and views of surrounding water.
“Territorians want to see building design in our CBD promote our tropical lifestyle, and the form and design of buildings has a big impact on the look and feel of the city,” Ms Lawrie said.
“Consultation has taken place along with public meetings about what Territorians want to see in their capital city.
“The result of the consultations following advice from the Urban Design Advisory Panel (UDAP) has led to a proposed maximum height of buildings in the CBD of 90 metres Above Ground Level (AGL).”
Ms Lawrie proposes to amend the Northern Territory Planning Scheme to include:
· A new vision and principles for
· A maximum building height of 90 metres AGL;
· A two tiered building form consisting of a podium base and tower element with a six metre setback to all sides, to promote breeze and light;
· Peer review by UDAP of major development design to ensure new buildings meet city users’ expectations for a tropical city; and
· Active spaces at the ground floor of new buildings, and shaded pedestrian passage around the CBD.

The proposed changes to the Planning Scheme will go on public exhibition to promote community feedback.
