Work At New Palmerston Suburb Begins

Work has started on the $130 million suburb of Bellamack - the first of four new suburbs for Palmerston – following this morning’s signing of the Development Agreement.

Minister for Planning and Lands, Delia Lawrie, was on site to see the first works by Brierty Limited and Urban Pacific to build the new suburb, which will deliver about 150 jobs in the construction industry.

“The first stage of Bellamack will provide 234 housing lots across a range of lot sizes and prices, including affordable housing packages,” Ms Lawrie said.

“The start of work on 670 blocks is part of the Territory Government’s comprehensive plan to meet the increasing demand for housing,” Ms Lawrie said.

“We know some families are finding it hard to buy their own home and the start of work at Bellamack will help to ease some of the pressure.

“Developers Brierty and Urban Pacific have forged local partnerships, including with Larrakia Development Corporation, to do the work with about 150 jobs expected to flow from this project.

“This is a major new development for Palmerston and the housing lots will also include a mix of affordable housing, social and defence housing.

“Bellamack will lead a major expansion of Palmerston with the new suburbs housing over 15,000 people.

“Expressions of interest are already being sought from land purchasers.

“Today’s announcement coincides with the commencement of the Territory Government’s new Homestart NT scheme which makes it easier for low and middle income earners to buy their own home.

“Buildstart has also been extended for a further six months.

“Under this initiative the Northern Territory Government provides a $14,000 grant to eligible purchasers to stimulate new housing and unit construction.”

The Territory Government is committed to affordable housing options for Territorians by mandating 15% of all new housing subdivisions for public and social housing.

This project represents the first subdivision development contracted by the Northern Territory Government which meets this requirement.

Headworks commenced in December last year and are continuing in parallel with the subdivision works to turn off the land by the end of the year.
