Frances Bay Area Plan Released

Planning Minister Delia Lawrie today released the Frances Bay area plan that will guide future development of this important site.

Ms Lawrie said the Duck Pond could be increased by about 50% - or 45 extra marina berths - as part of a planned mixed-use development that includes a residential component.

Frances Bay is in one of Darwin’s prime locations and the Henderson Government wants to make it even better for Territorians and tourists,” Ms Lawrie said.

Marina development is appropriate on this site which is underused and its development will greatly enhance the aesthetics of this site.

“The Frances Bay Area Plan provides the setting for a development of the reclaimed sea area into a residential development with the site known as the Gobi Desert to be used as an expansion of the Duck Pond Marina, as well as a fish market.

“We are also proposing an expansion of the mooring basin and creation of additional locked marina berths, as well as a transport hub for ferry services.

“Development of Frances Bay will also raise awareness of the area’s history and development of additional marina berthing sites - including the Gobi Desert - will support the growing charter boat and coastal cruising industries.”

Ms Lawrie said the Territory Government has already discussed development of Frances Bay with directly affected stakeholders and will soon seek public input on the Frances Bay draft area plan.
