More Funding For Territory Schools' Green Projects

Selected schools around the Territory are embarking upon green projects funded by the Northern Territory Government’s EnvironmeNT School Project Grants.

The projects aim to improve environmental sustainability in our schools to protect the clean and green lifestyle we enjoy for future generations.

A total of $21,610 in grants has been allocated to eleven schools which successfully applied to the grants program.

Minister for Natural Resources, Environment and Heritage Alison Anderson said it was important to teach children about the importance of sustainability so that they can learn to consider the effect on their environment as they go about their daily lives.

“There are some great projects happening in the schools under these grants, including sustainable gardens, ways to reduce energy and water consumption and a wetlands project,” Ms Anderson said.

“We need to promote these practical ways to demonstrate sustainability to our young people. We all need to be thinking about how we can change our lifestyles to conserve resources and minimise our impact on this beautiful natural environment that we’re lucky to enjoy here in the Territory.”

Ms Anderson said she was impressed by the projects put forth by the schools.

Nightcliff Primary School will run a recycling trial led by their Eco Rangers, who are a group of student leaders who want to help improve their classmates’ awareness of the environment, and they’ve been allocated $2000 funding to put this into practice,” Ms Anderson said.

She said Nightcliff Primary had a strong record of promoting environmental awareness, having successfully planted a native tree garden and developing a water wise garden in previous years.

Students from the school have also been spreading recycled mulch from Shoal Bay dump over the native trees on the school’s grounds to retain moisture in the soil.
