Affordable Innovative Housing for Palmerston

New homeowners will be able to build a small, affordable home with the option of adding extra bedrooms, an ensuite bathroom or verandah as they can afford it, under a new project launched by the Chief Minister Paul Henderson today.

He said the 32 ground-level expandable homes will be contained in the new affordable housing precinct of Bellamack Gardens within the suburb of Bellamack.

“This development is about getting more houses on the market, giving Territorians more options and making housing more affordable,” Mr Henderson said.

“The $10.45 million development is part of the Territory Government’s comprehensive Housing the Territory framework to meet the increasing demand for housing.

We know our housing system is out of balance. This new flexible housing concept will help get the balance right.

“All the extensions are pre-approved – so people who start with a one or two-bedroom house can easily expand their home as the family grows.

“This provides flexibility, reduces the initial cost of construction and provides a new choice of affordable homes for eligible Territorians.”

Work on roads and services for the new precinct will begin later this year, with new homeowners expected to move in from the middle of next year.

Bellamack Gardens will be the first to be developed by the Government’s Land Development Corporation after its role was expanded to include residential and affordable housing development.

The housing and land packages will be sold from approximately $280,000 for a one-bedroom home, $350,000 for a two-bedroom and $395,000 for a three-bedroom home.

The lots range from 150m2 to 360m2 and will be available to those Territorians eligible for Homestart NT.

Local builders will be invited to provide expressions of interest to work with the Land Development Corporation to develop and build the blocks.
