Football Program Targets Up and Coming Stars

A remote Northern Territory football team that has been selected to attend Queensland’s inaugural Indigenous Football Carnival, today took part in a national development program in the lead-up to the major competition.

Sports Minister Karl Hampton and Football Federation of Australia and NT representatives today visited the Borroloola Cyclones in their hometown to provide an intense one on one training session with the under-16s.

Mr Hampton said Adelaide United captain Travis Dodd, as well as Program Ambassador and Borroloola-born football identify John Moriarty took part in the FFA and FFNT-run Indigenous Football Development Program.

“This is a brilliant development program with mentors and players sent out to different communities across Australia to give young Indigenous football players the chance to learn new tricks and skills from the very best,” Mr Hampton said.

Mr Hampton said around 45 players, including some representatives from Alice Springs and Darwin, will represent the Territory at the Indigenous Football Festival which will be held in Townsville from Friday 3rd July - Thursday 9th July, 2009.

“The FFA have sent ambassadors across many communities in Australia to pick the best up and coming stars for this carnival, and it is just brilliant that the Borroloola Cyclones have been selected as one of only 12 communities in Australia to take part,” Mr Hampton said.

“The NT Government thanks the FFA and FFNT for giving these youngsters the opportunity to become involved in this elite carnival and we wish the Cyclones all the best of luck.”
