First Class Cricket for Central Australia

Minister for Sport and Recreation Karl Hampton will meet with the heads of the South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) and NT Cricket this week in a bid to attract a Ford Ranger Cup cricket match to Alice Springs later this year.

Mr Hampton said he had been discussing the possibility of bringing a round of the Ford Ranger Cup one-day series to Traeger Park with NT Cricket.

“NT Cricket is very supportive of the proposal and has been in discussions with its interstate counterparts,” Mr Hampton said.

“They have also gained the enthusiastic support of Alice Springs Mayor Damien Ryan for the proposed match.

“I have written to the CEO of SACA, Mr Mike Deare in support of bringing the match to Alice Springs.

Traeger Park would be an ideal venue – a first class facility for a first class game of cricket.

“Central Australians are passionate about sport and I’m sure will welcome the opportunity to see Alice Springs included as part of the domestic 50 over competition.

“Mayor Ryan and I will be meeting representatives from SACA and NT Cricket in Alice Springs later this week to further discuss the proposal.”

Mayor Ryan said Traeger Park was an ideal ground for this type of match.

“The facilities at Traeger will support a Ford Ranger Cup match and it would be a great opportunity to showcase some of our great sporting facilities in Alice,” Mr Ryan said.

“I look forward to watching some of our top cricketers in action here in Alice Springs.”

“It would be fantastic to see some of Australia’s best players vying for Ford Ranger Cup premiership points,” added Mr Hampton.

“It raises the tantalising prospect of watching our home grown Territory rookies in the South Australian squad, Cameron Francis and Kane Richardson possibly getting a run in front of their home crowd.”
