Palumpa Causeway To Be Upgraded

The Northern Territory Government will invest $500 000 to upgrade the Nganmarriyanga causeway.

Member for Daly Rob Knight said the grant has been approved for the Victoria Daly Shire to assist the Mutchirr Corporation in upgrading the causeway.

“As the local member I am aware of the concerns relating to flooding and this work will improve access and safety for Palumpa residents,” Mr Knight said.

“Seasonal flooding in the wet season isolates sections of the community from some services and reduces Victoria Daly Shire Council’s access to operate its services.

“Works will increase the height of the causeway, making it more accessible to residents and the Shire throughout the wet season and providing a separate and dedicated pedestrian walkway.

“The Victoria – Daly Shire is a key partner in this important project and the Federal Government has also committed $750,000 to complete this upgrade,” Mr Knight said.

In April and May this year consultative meetings with the Nganmarriyanga community were used to develop a draft town plan.

The Department of Planning and Infrastructure, Local Government and Housing, Northern Territory Emergency Services, Power and Water, NRETAS, and Health and Families were involved.

“Agreement has been reached not to permit any further development on the side of Palumpa prone to seasonal inundation,” Mr Knight said.

“The plan makes provision for new housing areas, community facilities, recreation and service commercial areas to be located on the north western “dry” side of the town.

“This funding will allow the community to use the causeway throughout the year making access to day to day activities and services much easier.”
