Karl Hampton MINISTER FOR SPORT AND RECREATION |
The Territory Government will provide more than $2.2 million to remote communities in 2009-10 as part of its three-year Active Remote Communities Grant Program.
Sport and Recreation Minister Karl Hampton said $2.254 million would go towards eight Territory shires, two community councils and three non-government Indigenous community organisations to increase and improve physical activity programs in remote communities.
Two Indigenous corporations will also be provided with funding to support the employment of two Indigenous Sport Officers and program funding in Nhulunbuy and Tennant Creek.
“The Territory Government is committed to improving the lives of all Territorians and this includes delivering better health outcomes in remote communities,” Mr Hampton said.
“The 2009-10 funding of $2.254 million includes $1 million Closing the Gap funding to fund Community Sport and Recreation Officers (CSROs) across the Territory.
“This funding will help increase participation and involvement in sport and physical activities by Indigenous Territorians living in remote communities by providing sustainable, structured and targeted physical activities and events.
“The Program also aims to provide recipients with certainty of income and employment and consistency in program development and support to CSROs and Shires.
“A key goal within the Program is to also establish a career pathway for Indigenous Territorians through formal skills development and resulting opportunities to work in a range of youth, health and sport positions.”
Funding recipients include:
Barkly Shire $213,648
MacDonnell Shire $320,472
Victoria Daly Shire $249,256
Unincorporated Bodies $50,356
NGOs $93,097
