New SIHIP Homes Underway

Minister for Housing Rob Knight and Minister for Indigenous Policy Malarndirri McCarthy today inspected work underway on new homes at Groote Eylandt under the Australian and Northern Territory Government’s Strategic Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure Program.

“$672 million has been committed over the 5 year program to construct 750 new houses, 230 rebuilds of existing houses and 2500 upgrades plus essential infrastructure including power, water and sewage,” Mr Knight said.

“The first package of works at Groote Eylandt will see 26 new homes built at Angurugu, Milyakburra and Umbakumba.

“Six new houses are underway following clearing, surveying, installation of in-ground services such as power, water and sewerage and the laying of concrete.

“The first homes will be complete later this year and are the first of eighty homes to be built at Groote Eylandt over the duration of the program.

“Refurbishment work is a fundamental component of the work taking place at Groote Eylandt and significant upgrades will benefit up to 50% of the Groote Eylandt population”.

Four upgraded homes have already been handed over (2 weeks ahead of schedule) to local families and another thirteen homes are currently being refurbished.

“Importantly, local people contributed to housing design, which included improving access and functionality for sufferers of the genetic Machado-Joseph Disease,” Ms McCarthy said.

“The Australian and Territory Governments are determined to address the appalling living conditions in remote Indigenous communities.

“This record Indigenous social housing program is essential for protecting children, improving health, education and local employment opportunities.

“Local indigenous men are receiving training and employment through this housing program and the Alliance workforce is currently well above the minimum requirement of 20% local indigenous employment.

“The Territory Government is committed to getting this program right and delivering 750 new homes.  We cannot repeat the failings of the past.”
