Cricket’s Redbacks To Host Bulls In The Red Centre

Sports Minister Karl Hampton today announced the Territory Government will provide $110,000 to support the first ever Ford Ranger Cup cricket match at Alice Springs on 14 November.

“The defending champion Queensland Bulls will play the South Australia Redbacks at Traeger Park in what promises to be another exciting sporting event in Alice Springs,” Mr Hampton said.

“Both teams will have several players pushing for national selection with Australia’s summer of international cricket starting with a Test series against the West Indies on 26 November.

“This includes Redbacks bowler Shaun Tait and batsman Callum Ferguson, as well as Queensland all-rounder James Hopes.

“I certainly hope home grown Territory rookies Kane Richardson and Cameron Francis are selected as part of the Redbacks team to play in front of their home crowd, alongside Australian Test wicketkeeper Graham Manou, who played for PINT in Darwin.”

Mr Hampton thanked everyone involved in making the Alice Springs cricket match possible, including Mayor Damien Ryan, NT Cricket, the South Australian Cricket Association and Queensland Cricket.

“Central Australians are passionate about sport and I’m sure many of us will make the most of the chance to see Alice Springs included as part of the domestic 50 over cricket competition,” Mr Hampton said.

“A key feature of the weekend will include the Redbacks conducting cricket clinics and activities with local Indigenous communities on the day after the 14 November match.”

Northern Territory Cricket Chief Executive Officer Andrew Ramsay said the match would be a boost for the growing popularity of cricket in Alice Springs.

“This is a first for the NT – a genuine first class match for points as part of the national fixture,” Mr Ramsay said.

“I am delighted that this match is going ahead and I know that Alice Springs fans are going to enjoy a great game.”
