$1.6m to Protect Sailing Clubs

The Minister for Infrastructure, Delia Lawrie, and the Member for Fannie Bay, Michael Gunner, today announced a $1.6 million project to re-build the rock wall at the Darwin Sailing and the Darwin Trailer Boat clubs.

“Water sports and outdoor activities are a major feature of our great Territory lifestyle and this stretch of Darwin beach and the two clubs are iconic to Darwin,” Ms Lawrie said.

“This $1.6 million project to re-build the rock wall will protect the area from erosion, reduce damage during severe storms and provide long-term stability for this section of foreshore.”

Mr Gunner said the investment was important to the clubs and its members to protect the area, particularly in the event of storm surges.

“About 75,000 locals and tourists visit the Sailing and Trailer Boat clubs every year, use the boat ramps or relax on the beach,” Mr Gunner said.

“The new rock wall is an investment in our tropical life style – I'm one of many people that love kicking back at the Sailing or Trailer boat club of an evening.”

Works are due to be undertaken during the wet season and completed in ready for next year’s dry season.

“The clubs have worked together on the funding proposal and detailed engineering works and will continue to work with the Territory Government on the project construction to protect this important asset,” Ms Lawrie said.
