The speed and red light cameras are being introduced based on recommendations from the road safety taskforce report.
“I make no apologies for doing anything I can to save the lives of Territorians and to make our roads safer for Territory families,” Mr McCarthy said.
“Running red lights is reckless, stupid behaviour that not only endangers the life of the driver, but the life of other innocent Territorians.
“Speed kills and too many families have to suffer the anguish and pain of losing loved ones because of speeding drivers who don’t get the message.
“This Government will continue to take any step that is reasonable and responsible to save Territory lives, because one death on our roads is one too many.”

The first camera was installed at Pinelands in January 2008. This camera photographed an average of 203 red light or speeding offences each day when it was first installed. This number has now reduced to approximately 50 per day, reflecting a positive change in driver behaviour.
Four cameras are being installed this month, and will then operate on a trial and testing basis. They are expected to be operational in October. The remaining four will be installed by the end of the year, and are expected to be operational early next year.
