New Home For Drag Racing In Central Australia

Motor sport in Central Australia got a fuel-injected boost today when Sports Minister Kon Vatskalis turned the first sod at the new Alice Springs Drag Racing Strip.

Minister for Sport and Recreation Kon Vatskalis said the new drag strip would provide motor sport in Central Australia with a first class facility.

“The $800,000 capital grant for the construction of this facility will fulfil an election promise to the

Central Australian Drag Racing Association (CADRA) to find drag racing in Central Australia a new home,” Minister Vatskalis said.

“The new drag strip will further raise the profile of motor sports in Central Australia.

“I congratulate CADRA on all their hard work to bring this project to fruition.

“The strip not only means that drag racers will get to have their own facility, it means jobs for locals with CADRA contracting almost all of the work to Central Australian businesses.”

The new drag strip will be located at the Finke Desert Race Start/Finish Line and share facilities such as the access road, car parking and ablutions.

“The drag strip comes on top of the recently finished $5.5m upgrade of Traeger Park and the $8.1m already given to the Alice Springs Town Council for the construction of a brand new aquatic centre.

The Martin Government will continue to deliver top class sporting infrastructure projects which add to the great lifestyle enjoyed by Alice Springs residents.
