$60,000 To Support Ice Skating In Alice Springs

Sport and Recreation Minister Karl Hampton today announced the Territory Government will provide $60,000 to help install an ice skating rink at the Alice Springs Convention Centre.

“An ice skating rink at Alice Springs will be a first for the town and provide many Territorians with a great recreational and healthy outlet during the hot summer months,” Mr Hampton said.

“That’s why the Territory Government has provided a $60,000 Grant to the Convention Centre to help it transport and install a temporary ice skating rink on its premises.

Alice Springs youth in particular will be able to maximise use of the ice skating rink as it will be open for six weeks during the hot summer months, including during the school holidays.

“The Alice Springs Town Council is supporting the proposal with around $10,000 earmarked for the project.

“I urge local businesses to help support the Convention Centre’s push to install and operate a 30m x 15m ice skating rink for six weeks.”

Mr Hampton said the Alice Springs Convention Centre normally shuts from December to February and an ice skating rink would be popular among locals and tourists, as well as supporting many jobs.

“The Territory Government is always looking at providing our youth with options during the school holidays and I think an ice skating rink in Alice Springs is a great idea,” Mr Hampton said.

“The ice skating rink will provide a location for Territory families to have fun together in a secure and safe environment with on-site security.

“And if the ice skating rink proves popular, it could come back next year.”
