McMinn Street Works to Begin this Week

The Minister for Infrastructure, Delia Lawrie, today announced that work on the third stage on the McMinn Street upgrade will begin this week.

Ms Lawrie said Northern Territory-based company Wolphers Grahl will undertake the works on the $5 million upgrade.

McMinn Street is a major thoroughfare and is the main entry to the Central Business District and the Darwin Waterfront,” Ms Lawrie said.

“The third stage of the project will widen McMinn Street from two lanes to four between Frances Bay Drive and Foelsche Street.

“New street lighting, landscaping and an elevated footpath constructed to disability standards will also be included as part of the upgrade.

“The project will also include significant works at the Tiger Brennan Drive intersection which will improve traffic flow.”

Ms Lawrie said the planned upgrade would not compromise nearby heritage sites including the old Railway Club and Stella Maris Hostel.

She said the upgrade to McMinn Street will not only improve traffic flow for motorists but also provide a boost the Northern Territory economy by creating jobs.

“Stage three of the McMinn Street Duplication will create 34 jobs including five apprentices and continue to support work in the construction industry as well as meet the growing traffic demand to service the CBD,” she said.

“The next stages of the McMinn Street duplication between Tiger Brennan Drive and the Stuart Highway will be progressively rolled out over the next five years,” she said.
