Tiger Brennan extension delivering jobs

Works on the biggest road project in the Northern Territory’s history is on track and is delivering Territory jobs.

During a tour of works on stage two of the Tiger Brennan Drive project, the Minister for Infrastructure, Delia Lawrie, said the project is steaming ahead with 102 workers currently on site with an expected 200 workers including sub-contractors expected during peak construction.

“This $110 million major road upgrade will transform the transport corridor between Darwin, Palmerston and the rural area,” Ms Lawrie said.

“As well as reducing traffic delays for an estimated 34,000 vehicles a day including road trains and heavy vehicles, the Tiger Brennan Drive project is creating Territory jobs.

“With work on stage two well underway, 110 workers are already on site, including 18 trainees undertaking certificate courses in civil construction.

“At the peak of construction it is expected 200 workers including sub-contractors will be working on the project which includes a 7.5 kilometre extension of Tiger Brenan Drive from Berrimah Road to the Stuart Highway.

“Highlighting the scale of this job mine size 785 dump trucks are being used to move around more than 300,000 cubic metres of earth.

“This project is boosting Territory jobs during a time of global recession as well as helping trainees to gain important qualifications to work on future infrastructure projects in the NT.”

Ms Lawrie said foundation works have also started on the much anticipated Stuart Highway overpass.

Stage two of the Tiger Brennan Drive upgrade is expected to be completed in late 2010.

Ms Lawrie also said works on the new inbound overtaking lanes on Tiger Brennan Drive between Amy Johnston Avenue and Bombing Road were complete.

Work on outbound overtaking lanes between Woolner and Benison roads is expected to be completed by the end of the dry season.

“The Henderson Government has provided $2.2 million for this project which Downer EDI is undertaking,” Ms Lawrie said.

“The project includes construction of two kilometres of new passing lanes which will remove traffic bottlenecks and streamline both inbound and outbound traffic.

“As well as improving the traffic flow for motorists this project has provided a boost to the economy by creating 25 Territory jobs.”
