The Minister for Planning and Lands, Delia Lawrie, today welcomed the announcement by Charles Darwin University of plans for a residential development at its Palmerston campus that could see up to 500 new homes built.

Joining CDU Vice Chancellor, Professor Barney Glover, Ms Lawrie said CDU’s residential development will provide more housing options at Palmerston.

“This is a significant development with up to 500 new housing lots, and is in addition to the fast-tracking of four new suburbs at Palmerston East,” Ms Lawrie said.

“This exciting initiative will create a new housing development closely located to CDU’s Palmerston campus as well as the future International Sports Complex.”

Prof Glover said a detailed feasibility study and a geotechnical survey of the 50ha block have been completed and following approval by the University Council and planning approval the first lots are expected to be for sale by 2010.

“This is a unique opportunity for Palmerston and the University, providing more housing lots with the extra resources generated from the sale of the land to be invested into the university,” Prof Glover said.

“The proposal also includes the construction of student and staff accommodation.”

The site earmarked for development is located near Durack and the site of the future Palmerston International Sporting Complex.

The Henderson Government has provided CDU $33 million for the construction of the sporting complex which will include new facilities for football, soccer, rugby and tennis.

Consultations with sporting groups have begun with work on the first stage of the four-year project expected to begin in 2010-11. The project will be built in partnership with the Charles Darwin University.

“Palmerston is rapidly expanding and residents deserve world class sports facilities that will enhance their lifestyle,” Ms Lawrie said.
