Red Light Speed Cameras Switched On For Trial

The Henderson Government’s crackdown on dangerous motorists who speed through red light intersections steps up another notch today, with the start of the testing period for the first four of eight new safety cameras for the Darwin region.

Mr McCarthy said he hoped the cameras will change driver behaviour, save lives and make the roads safer for territory families.

“If we can stop one accident from happening and prevent someone from being injured or killed, then we’re making a positive impact,” Mr McCarthy said.

“We would be thrilled if we didn’t catch anybody speeding or ignoring red light signals with these cameras.

“The ideal outcome would be for motorists to take heed of the safety message and to safeguard themselves and others by coming to a stop at red lights and driving within the speed limit.

“Anyone who shows disregard for their own life and the lives of their fellow road users will be slapped with a fine and demerit points  and they have no one to blame for that but themselves.”

Mr McCarthy today inspected installation work on the new red light speed camera at the intersection of the Stuart Highway and Woolner Rd, which has been the site of 37 crashes since 2004.

Testing periods for cameras at four locations in the Darwin region start now and will run until the end of this month.

It’s expected that the cameras will be fully operational in October, with infringements being issued by Northern Territory Police.

The four locations being tested at are;

Stuart Hwy/Ross Smith Avenue – Stuart Hwy inbound

Stuart Hwy/Woolner RdStuart Hwy outbound

Bagot Rd/McMillans RdMcMillans Rd left turn

Stuart Hwy/Berrimah Rd – Stuart Hwy inbound

Another four cameras will be installed in December, bringing to nine the number of red light speed cameras in the Darwin region.
