Construction is well underway on the Henderson Government’s $12.3 million expansion of prisoner accommodation at Alice Springs Correctional Centre.
The new units are part of the Government’s commitment to bringing in a new era of corrections by providing a safe and secure environment for the effective management and rehabilitation of prisoners.
Correctional Services Minister Gerry McCarthy today inspected progress on the Women’s Accommodation, Male Medium/Low Security Accommodation and Male Low/Open Security Accommodation at the
“We’re building highly functional living quarters for prisoners which will allow staff to monitor, assess and supervise them in the most effective way,” Mr McCarthy said.
“We’re aiming to reduce the likelihood of prisoners re-offending by fostering an environment where we provide strong rehabilitation and integration programs and services, which will encourage prisoners to become more productive members of the community.”
The Henderson Government is investing $23.6 million in prison infrastructure as part of the Northern Territory Correctional Services Short to Medium Term Capital Works program.
The Alice Springs Correctional Centre will get $12.3 million in upgrades, while $11.3 million will be spent on the Darwin Correctional Centre.

The new medium/low security unit for males will feature 24 beds with construction expected to be finished in December.
A separate male low/open security section is also being constructed and will feature two units which will have a combined capacity of 48 beds. This is scheduled for completion in February next year.
