Logo and New School Colours Revealed

The Chief Minister Paul Henderson and the Minister for Central Australia Karl Hampton today unveiled the new Centralian Middle School logo and the school colours.

Mr Henderson said 12-year-old Alice Springs High School student Terazita Turner designed the logo, which has been reproduced in the ochre and blue colours of the new school.

“The design unites both campuses, is geographically significant and well thought out,” he said.

Terazita describes the logo as: “Sunrise, the MacDonnell Ranges, Anzac Hill and the Todd River.  When ASHS kids look outside we see the MacDonnell Ranges and when the Anzac kids look out they see the Anzac Hill and we are under one sun and near one river: the Todd River.”

Mr Henderson presented Terazita with a certificate today. She also won an Ipod and car kit donated by Harvey Norman.

About 30 entries were received from students, teachers and parents.

“It’s encouraging to see students and families getting behind the new school as we prepare to begin operations at the start of the next school year,” Mr Henderson said.

Mr Henderson and Mr Hampton unveiled the logo and new school colours at the first meeting of the Centralian Middle School’s Student Leaders’ group.

The 20-member group is made up of the new school principal Therese Hicks, two student representatives from all the Alice Springs primary schools and two student representatives each from Anzac Hill High School and Alice Springs High School.

The group will discuss issues that impact on Centralian Middle School students, such as new school uniforms, values and behaviour guidelines.

Mr Hampton said the creation of the Centralian Middle School is a key plank of the Alice Springs Youth Action Plan to tackle youth crime and anti-social behaviour.

Under the plan, the Territory Government has committed to:

Mr Hampton said under the Youth Action Plan, the Northern Territory Government has already delivered:

·        a Police Beat in the Todd Mall;

·        established a voluntary “no school no service” code of practice;

·        established a new position within Police for a Youth Services Co-ordinator

·        Provided additional funding to the Gap Youth Centre to provide recreation services

“The Northern Territory Government is delivering the most comprehensive youth plan ever developed for Alice Springs,” he said.

“We will continue to progress the initiatives in the plan to make Alice Springs a safer place to live.”
