Draw Set For Australian Tennis Pro Tour Tournament

Territory sports fans are set for an exciting two weeks of tennis action with the main draw finalised for this week’s Northern Territory Tennis International, starting in Darwin today.

Sport Minister Karl Hampton said the Territory Government is proudly supporting the Australian Pro Tour event with $180,000 in funding as part of a three-year deal.

“Tennis is a much loved sport throughout Australia and the Territory Government is proud to be hosting such a wonderful tournament in Darwin for the next two weeks,” Mr Hampton said.

“Former World number eight Alicia Molik is one of the key drawcards and is set to team up with Nicole Kriz later today on centre court as part of the women’s doubles against Shannon Golds and Emelyn Starr.

“Alicia has a great following throughout the community and has done herself and her country proud through the many professional tournaments she has competed in, as well as the Olympics and Federation Cup.

“Alicia has won many titles throughout her career, and won bronze at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, and I wish her all the best at this week’s tournament.

“Another key drawcard will be Australian youngster, Olivia Rogowska, who came close to defeating World number one Dinara Safina at this month’s US Open.

“Olivia is in the second year of her professional career and will combine with Tyra Calderwood against Lejia Husic and Deeon Mladin later today as part of the women’s doubles competition.

“Apart from Alicia Molik and Olivia Rogowska, who start their singles campaigns on centre court tomorrow on opposite sides of the singles draw, we will see some top international players here in the Territory playing for more than $50,000 prize money and vital world ranking points.

“Alicia has played in this tournament before and other past Pro Tour players include Lleyton Hewitt, Pat Rafter and Casey Dellacqua.

“This is an exciting development for the Territory with the benefits expected to extend beyond the sporting arena.

“Expected economic benefits to the local community are over $500,000 per tournament with players, officials and supporters spending on essential services and recreational activities.”

This week’s tournament is being held at the Gardens Tennis Centre along Gilruth Avenue and entry is free.
