Calls for tenders for Port of Darwin studies

Tenders are being invited to undertake two feasibility studies for the expansion of Darwin’s East Arm Wharf.

Minister for Infrastructure, Delia Lawrie, welcomed the Rudd Labor Government funding of $3.2 million for the studies which will look at the scope of infrastructure required for the upgrade at the East Arm Wharf.

“The proposed expansion of East Arm Wharf will significantly increase the Port of Darwin’s capacity, reduce costs as well as confirm Darwin as a significant transport and logistics centre,” Ms Lawrie said.

“The Port of Darwin is positioned to play a pivotal role in the nation’s future industrial growth, particularly in the Austral-Asian region.

“The expansion of the East Arm Wharf is a key priority for the Territory which is why the Henderson Government is investing $100 million.

“This is further supported by a $50 million commitment from the Rudd Labor Government to expand the Port, subject to further work by Infrastructure Australia.

“East Arm is currently the largest live cattle export port in Australia and the main service base for the region’s offshore oil and gas industry.

“However increasing volumes bulk ore and resources is driving demand for the Port of Darwin to boost capacity and accommodate larger ships,” she said.

The East Arm Wharf and Land-Based Infrastructure study (Vessels Greater than Panamax) will look at current facilities at the wharf and detail future infrastructure needs to accommodate future export needs.

The All Tides Study will examine and make recommendations about the deepening and possible re-alignment of the approach to the East Arm Wharf to accommodate larger vessels and allow ships to enter Darwin Harbour regardless of tidal conditions.

Tenders close on September 30. For more information visit the tenders page at www.nt.gov.au
