The Australian and Northern Territory Governments today announced $48 million in funding under Stage Two of the Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan.

NT Minister for Housing Rob Knight and Member for Solomon Damian Hale today visited a St Vincent De Paul site where ten two-bedroom units will be constructed following the funding announcement.

“The Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan has been instrumental in protecting jobs in the Australian economy during the worst global recession in 75 years,” Ms Plibersek said.

"It’s our builders, tradies, manufacturers and suppliers who keep the economy ticking over. There is also the important social benefit of providing more affordable housing to those who need it the most."

Mr Knight said the Territory Government is committed to boosting the economy, supporting jobs for Territorians and improving the social housing stock.

“We have a growing demand for social housing and through this funding we will deliver more than 180 dwellings across the Territory. Operation Stimulus has already seen more than 280 dwellings benefit from refurbishments, and a further 22 homes are being constructed under Stage One,” Mr Knight said.

“The funding will deliver more safe and affordable housing for Territorians who are in need, reduce wait times for public housing and meet areas of high demand.”

This second round of funding will see the Territory Government partner with the social housing sector to improve housing services across the NT.  Three projects under this funding round will be built and operated directly by NGOs.

Stage Two Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan projects in the Top End:

“Housing and construction is a major employer in the Australian economy.  This funding will boost the economy and see more jobs for Territorians,” Mr Hale said.
