Water Safety Week was launched in the Territory today, with various events in an around the water planned to educate children about being water safety wise.
Minister for Local Government Rob Knight this morning joined forces with ‘Boof the Barra’ to launch the event at St Mary’s Primary School in
“This week is about reminding children and carers about the importance of being safe in and around the water,” Mr Knight said.
“Living in the Top End we all enjoy spending time in the water, lots of us also own boats. However you spend your time in the water you need to ensure you and your friends stay safe.
“The Water Safety Branch this year has a number of fun and educational events planned to remind Territorians how to stay safe in the water and be water safety wise.”
Water Safety Week begins around the Territory today and runs until September 30. It will include a number of exciting activities and events, including the Splashfest on Sunday at the Waterfront Precinct.
All activities will enable Territorians to learn more about water safety while participating in some fun activities.
“I remind all Territorians to stay safe this wet season with a few easy tips. These include making sure you supervise – it saves lives. Only swim in areas that have signs saying its safe. Always carry safety gear on your boat,” Mr Knight said.
