Minister Attends Housing Ministers Conference

Minister for Housing Rob Knight will today join his national counterparts at the Housing Minister’s Conference in Melbourne with Housing and Homelessness Reforms expected to be high on the agenda.

“Improving access to affordable housing is a significant issue across the country, and the Northern Territory faces unique challenges and conditions,” Mr Knight said.

“The Territory is growing and more people are calling the NT home which is why this year’s budget delivers a 92% boost for housing on previous years.

Through the Homelessness National Partnership Agreement more than $54 million will be invested over the next four years to tackle homelessness in the Territory.

“The expression of interest process for $1 million in Federal funding has been brought forward to invest in initiatives to immediately address the social housing issues facing the Territory.

This month $48 million in funding was also welcomed under Stage Two of the Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan.

“There isn’t one single solution to the social housing and homelessness issues facing the NT and the Territory Government is working on a number of different initiatives with the Federal Government.

“I plan to discuss these programs and initiatives at the conference and speak to my counterparts in other States and Territories about existing initiatives in their jurisdictions.”
