Delivering More Housing Options

The Chief Minister Paul Henderson today announced the first stage of the new Palmerston suburb of Johnston will be auctioned to pre-qualified residential developers on 30 October, making way for land to be purchased off the plan in November.

“This will mean more housing options to ease shortages and more jobs for Territorians,” Mr Henderson said.

“The first stage of Johnston will provide up to 417 new homes for Territorians.

“To provide more affordable housing options, 19 housing lots have been capped at $140,000 per lot and 11 multiple dwelling developments will be constructed, providing up to 53 units.”

Two parcels of land, providing 80 and 120 lots each will go to auction on 30 October with a development permit and completed development plans in place.

Seven local developers have pre-qualified to bid for the development of lots.

“The fast-tracking of land release at Johnston is part of the Housing the Territory strategy,” Mr Henderson said.

“It represents the first time a suburb has been released to developers with a development permit and completed development plans in place.

“A $10 million headwork project is already well underway at Johnston, providing the new roads, power, water and sewerage mains required for this new suburb.”

The Territory Government has provided $20 million for land release at Palmerston East, supporting the development of Johnston, Zuccoli and Mitchell, under Budget 2009.

The development of Palmerston East is set to provide more than 3000 new housing lots over five years, resulting in new housing for about 10,000 people.

Registration of interest for purchase of lots off the plan can be lodged at www.housingnt.nt.gov.au from Monday 5 October 2009.
