$3 Million Upgrade for Howard Springs Nature Park Begins

The Territory Government began the first stage of a$3 million restoration works for the Howard Springs Nature Park today to improve the popular recreation spot.

Minister for Parks and Wildlife, Karl Hampton, said the $500,000 first stage of the park upgrade will involve a trial maintenance program aiming to improve water quality allowing for safe swimming at Howard Springs.

“The Territory Government is delivering a $3 million restoration program at Howard Springs Nature Park over the next three years to make it an even better Top End attraction,” Mr Hampton said.

“An electrofisher was used today to stun and relocate the fish in the main pool at the park and relocate them to the Territory Wildlife Park.

“There are a lot of fish in main pool and they are contributing to water quality issues.

“The stage one $500,000 trial maintenance program will be guided by independent technical advice to see whether water quality can be improved to allow safe swimming.

“Stage one also includes other remediation works such as drainage of the main pool and removal of silt and debris.

“The $3 million towards Howard Springs Nature Park as part of its $8 million fund for improvements to Territory parks over the next three years,” Mr Hampton said.

The Territory Government is also calling for nominations for the Howard Springs Nature Park Local Management Committee.

“Suitably qualified and committed community members are invited to nominate to become members of the Local Management Committee,” Mr Hampton said.

“The committee will advise the Territory Parks and Wildlife Service on implementing management plans, issues such as public use of the park, and looking after wildlife and heritage values.”
