Animal Welfare Act Review

A Discussion Paper is now available for comment into the review of the Animal Welfare Act.

Minister for Local Government Rob Knight said the Northern Territory Animal Welfare Act was introduced almost ten years ago.

“The Act has been in place since March 2000 and a review is taking place to ensure that it continues to effectively provide for the welfare of animals and the prevention of cruelty,” Mr Knight said.

“Submissions will open tomorrow for industry groups, animal welfare groups, animal breeder associations and the general public to have their say and guide the finalisation of the review.

“This review provides an opportunity to re-examine policy and discuss the adequacy of penalties in relation of the Act.

“No one likes to see or hear about cruelty to animals and this review will allow us to evaluate the adequacy of the Act to deal with animal cruelty incidents.”
