Western Davenport Water Allocation Planning Commenced

Minister for Natural Resources, Karl Hampton, today announced the Territory Government is developing a Water Allocation Plan for surface water and groundwater in the Western Davenport Water Control District.

Mr Hampton said the plan will define the rules for the sharing and allocation of this water for the next decade in the District, which stretches from Barrow Creek up to the Devil’s Marbles Conservation Reserve.

“The Territory Government is acting now to ensure long term sustainable water use in the Western Davenport region,” Mr Hampton said.

“The Western Davenport Control District hosts significant water resources which are starting to be used for horticultural development, pastoral purposes and traditional uses by the community.

“The Water Allocation Plan will include an assessment of water availability from this resource, taking into consideration environmental and cultural water requirements and community needs.

“The development of the Plan will be the first step towards sustainable management of this resource.

“It will provide security for water users and define the rules which will enable developments that depend on groundwater to proceed in a sustainable manner.”

Mr Hampton said contribution to the draft plan from people who live within the Western Davenport Water Control District and key interest groups is essential to the development and inclusion of community needs and values.

It is anticipated that the Water Allocation Plan will be developed following consultation with stakeholders and the local community.
