Local Government and Planning Ministers Meet In Darwin

The Northern Territory will host the Local Government and Planning Ministers’ Council in Darwin today.

Minister for Local Government Rob Knight and Minister for Planning Delia Lawrie will join Anthony Albanese Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government and their national counterparts at the meeting.

Minister for Local Government Rob Knight said the meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss capacity building for Local Governments.

“Last year the Northern Territory Government’s significant Local Government reforms took place and we need to ensure that we continue to invest in Local Governments,” Mr Knight said.

“The new shires and expanded Local Government boundaries are leading to better delivery of services and new job and economic opportunities for Territorians.

“Minister Albanese has announced details of the $120 million Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program and I look forward to working with our Local Governments and the Local Government Association on attracting funding to the Territory.

“I will be pushing the Territory’s case to get a fair share of Federal funding initiatives aimed at strategic projects and increasing Local Governments capacity to deliver services.”
