Housing Upgrades Being Delivered

84 Territory families have already benefited from a significant drive to refurbish vacated public housing stock and another 84 will be moving into refurbished homes before Christmas.

Minister for Housing Rob Knight today handed over the keys to a young family who are moving into a newly refurbished home in Malak.

“The funding is delivering safe and affordable housing for Territorians who are in need, and will reduce wait times for public housing and meet areas of high demand,” Mr Knight said.

“In total refurbishment work on 289 public housing properties has been completed so far under the Rudd Government’s Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan.

“Work is underway to bring public housing stock back on-line and by Christmas I expect to see another 84 homes ready for new tenants.

“Stage One of the social housing stimulus has also enabled work to begin on four of the 22 new homes.  They will be complete by the end of next month to boost our housing stock.

“Stage Two will see $48 million deliver almost 200 dwellings, reducing wait times for public housing and meeting areas of high demand.

“I have met with a number of non-government service providers to discuss initiatives to immediately address the social housing issues facing the Territory.

“Many are busy preparing their submissions for a share of the $1 million package to tackle short term social housing issues and I am eager to see new housing stock delivered before the end of the year.

“I will also be meeting with caravan park owners to talk about expansion of their parks to provide more stock.”

Member for Solomon Damian Hale will be hosting a housing forum at Saint Mary’s Football Club tomorrow night to discuss initiatives to address our housing need in the Territory.

“The Rudd Government is delivering almost $60 million in the Territory under the Social Housing Stimulus package, and I want to see this work happening as quickly as possible,” Mr Hale said.
