Kormilda College Students Gear Up For Global Green Challenge

Environment Minister Karl Hampton today joined students at Kormilda College as they prepare for this month’s Global Green Challenge.

The Global Green Challenge – an evolution of the acclaimed World Solar Challenge – is the world’s leading, cross-continental showcase of the latest advances in hybrid, electric, solar, low emission and alternative energy vehicles.

The Challenge – worth an estimated $1 million to the Territory economy - combines the World Solar Challenge for purely solar-powered vehicles and the Eco Challenge for environmentally friendly production and experimental vehicles.

“The Territory Government is greening the Territory by supporting free public bus travel for students and seniors, energy smart and waterwise rebates and will cut carbon emissions from Government cars by 20% in the next five years,” Mr Hampton said.

“We are also proudly contributing $175,000 towards this year’s Global Green Challenge and a further $500 to support Kormilda College’s entry in the Adventure Class category of the World Solar Challenge.

Kormilda College is an international school with international connections and it is great to see it competing in its 7th consecutive World Solar Challenge.

“I congratulate the students and teachers who have contributed to the construction of their entry Towards Tomorrow which looks like it will do very well at this year’s event.

“The World Solar Challenge provides Kormilda students with an opportunity to learn valuable scientific, engineering and driving skills and share knowledge and new technologies with other learning institutions.

“The World Solar Challenge from Darwin to Adelaide has supported the global development of solar technology and it is great to see this format expand into the first ever Global Green Challenge which now includes the Eco Challenge.

“More than 60 teams from 17 different countries will compete at this year’s Challenge, which provides competitors with an opportunity to test and use their technological skills and devices, while also raising awareness about global climate change.”

This year’s Global Green Challenge begins in Darwin on 24 October with the start of the Eco Challenge, and the World Solar Challenge starts on Sunday 25 October from State Square.  Solar cars are expected to finish in Adelaide on 31 October.
